7-day Machame route Kilimanjaro climb itinerary
Arrival Day:
Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro Airport, you will be transferred to your hotel in Moshi. Here, you will meet your guides for a thorough briefing and preparation for the climb. This day is crucial for checking your gear and getting ready for the adventure ahead.
Day 1: Machame Gate to Machame Camp
After breakfast, you will drive to Machame Gate (1,800m) and begin your trek through the lush rainforest. The hike to Machame Camp (2,835m) takes about 5-7 hours, covering 11 kilometers. You’ll arrive at the camp in the late afternoon, where dinner will be served.
Day 2: Machame Camp to Shira Camp
Today’s trek takes you from Machame Camp to Shira Camp (3,750m). You will hike for approximately 4-6 hours, ascending through heather and moorland zones. This 5-kilometer trek offers stunning views of Mount Meru and the Shira Plateau.
Day 3: Shira Camp to Barranco Camp
From Shira Camp, you will trek to Barranco Camp (3,900m), passing through the Lava Tower (4,630m). This day involves 6-8 hours of hiking over 10 kilometers, allowing for acclimatization. The descent to Barranco Camp provides breathtaking views of the Barranco Wall and the Western Breach.
Day 4: Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp
Today, you will climb the Barranco Wall and trek to Karanga Camp (3,995m). This 5-kilometer hike takes about 4-5 hours and involves some scrambling. The trail offers panoramic views of the Karanga Valley and surrounding glaciers.
Day 5: Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp
The trek from Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp (4,640m) takes about 4-5 hours, covering 4 kilometers. This stage prepares you for the summit attempt, with an early dinner and rest at Barafu Camp.
Day 6: Barafu Camp to Summit and Back to Mweka Camp

Day 7: Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate
On the final day, you will trek from Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate (1,640m), a 3-4 hour descent over 10 kilometers through the rainforest. At the gate, you will receive your summit certificates before being transferred back to Moshi for a well-derseved rest at your accommodation.
